Predicting drill (Little Tennis)
prepared by David T. Porter, Ed.D., USPTA

Type: Singles Category: Predicting

Level: Beginner Time/players: 15 minutes/1-4

Description and goals:

Parent/coach rolls ball to one side of player. Player moves and stops ball with inside part of foot. Goal is for students to develop predicting skills. They should predict where their foot needs to be in order to stop the ball. Encourage students to stop ball while facing the coach.

Organization:

Spread players out along the court. Parent/coach gently rolls ball to one side of player. Player moves to the ball (generally in a side-steping motion) and stops ball with inside part of foot. Students return ball to parent/coach (either by kicking or tossing it). Parent/coach then rolls ball to other side and repeats. Variation: If students are able, have them roll balls to themselves.

Key points:

Students should predict where ball will travel while maintaining balance. Roll ball gentlly so student can stop it. Encourage students to stop ball while facing the coach. This will prepare students for more advanced skills to come.
