Second serve only
prepared by Brett Hobden, USPTA

Type: Singles/doubles Category: Return of serve/serve

Levels: Beginner/int./adv. Time/players: 15 minutes/1-8

Description and goals:

Players practice their second serves using a scoring system that promotes winning consecutive points. The receivers are trying to stop the servers from winning two consecutive points.

Organization:

Players serve in regular singles or doubles formation. Server only gets one serve. Player A serves to player B and they play out the point. If server wins the point, then a second point is played. Once a server has won two consecutive points he becomes the receiver. The server must announce to the receiver if he has one point before he serves. Rotate servers in after they lose a point. With doubles formation, server rotates to net position and team becomes servers or receivers. Variations: Use different rotations depending on number of players. Make players serve and volley. Make players attack and come in behind returns.

Key points:

Focus on good second serves and returns. Do not let servers win consecutive points.
